We meet at 6:30pm on the second Tuesday of each month at the
Farmington Community Library.

 Topics Include:

 Rise of computing in modern automotive DNA

 The growth of electronics within the automobile has been nothing
short of phenomenal. In 2015 it accounted for 13% of the total value
of the car and in 2018 it has now jumped to 20%. A large portion of
that has been purely due to the rise of computing component, such as
ADAS, ECUs, etc. New technologies such as 3D laminated glass, haptic
sensors, and augmented reality heads-up displays — which offer drivers
alerts, safety aids, and warnings on invisible screens embedded in the
windshield — have entered the vocabulary of traditional suppliers.
Large navigation and entertainment display screens in the dashboard
offer Web-based information and media as well as data arrays picked up
from networked roads and other cars. The autonomous car will further
up the ante, and soon. It will change the “living space” dimension of
automotive interiors. The front seat may be reoriented to face the
back seat, so passengers can converse as they would in their living
rooms while the car cruises to a destination. Or seats could face a
windshield that’s become a large movie screen.

 This talk will focus on many of what is the “under the hood”
computing portions, technologies and the accompanying massive software
baggage that needs to go with it. It is time we got more familiar with
the computing technologies and underlying foundations that go with it.

 We will introduce many terms, concepts and issues to help folks in
Automotive technologies get better prepared for the future (or is
fusion a better word?) world of automotive & computer tech.

 Biography:

 A seasoned scientific, technical and computing professional; Sharan
Kalwani has spent over 30+ years implementing many new and pioneering
technologies from operating systems (*nix), high performance computing
(Cray, SGI, compute clusters), engineering applications (CAE
simulations), optimization, networking (TCP/IP, Infiniband),
operations (ITIL, ITSM), scientific domain (BioInformatics) and
project management. Sharan always looks to boost the professional
profile of every individual he interacts with. 
 He enjoys teaching and is available for onsite professional training
on many open source technologies. He also contributes to STEM
activities and publishing.  He is a senior member of IEEE, ACM, Board
member Emeritus of Michigan!/usr/group, and President of SEMCO (one of
the pioneer computer user groups in Michigan), and serves as the Chair
of the IEEE SE Michigan Education Society Chapter for 2017. He is a
published author on the topic: "UNIX and TCP/IP network security"
ISBN: 1581430213, (May 1999). He is currently working hard on writing
his next book and learning an exciting/emerging new parallel Software
Defined storage system (which may be a future MUG.org topic).
