Regular MUG Meeting

We meet at 6:30pm on the second Tuesday of each month at the Farmington Community Library.

Topics Include:

**What's New in HIgh Performance Computing**

The world of High Performance Computing has traditionally been viewed as a little bit odd ball, however over the last 25+ years many techniques (and technologies) pioneered in this space have become mainstream. For example, solid state disk, visualization, high speed networking, the buzz phrase of the day "big data", etc.,etc.

So taking cue from the past, I will share what are the current attempts at pushing boundaries aside in the never ending thirst for bigger and faster. There are a myriad of frontiers such as energy consumption, energy efficiency, turning the classical von Neumann architecture on it's head, growing use of accelerators of all kinds, some weird forays in shaping silicon and a few innovative, maybe wild twists with existing models of computation as we know it.

One thing is for certain, the next 25 years will most likely look somewhat different that the past!

Sharan is currently the Director at the High Performance Computing Center, which is part of the Institute for Cyber-Enabled Research, Michigan State University. He holds a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Masters in Computer Science from Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan. He recently came back to Michigan from the Fermi National Accelerator Labs, Batavia, Illinois where he was a computing services architect. Before Fermi Lab, he was the Subject Matter Expert/Project lead at the UberCloud project, working on helping to realize HPC in the cloud. With 30 years of experience in scientific and technical computing, Sharan has worked at numerous HPC industry leaders that include Cray Research and Silicon Graphics. He has also spent several years in the automotive industry at General Motors, managing their global engineering HPC centers, as well as in the academic domain, most recently at KAUST in Saudi Arabia. Sharan is a member of the ACM, senior member of IEEE/Comp
uter Society, USENIX/LISA, AAAS and the Union of Concerned Scientists. He was one of the original founders of michigan!/usr/group (mug.org) back in 1985-86 At the time he was working with the original UNIX system V and BSD 4.x in source form at the Michigan Cancer Foundation, and managing a USENET hub as well. He also runs the popular discussion group 'Innovative Uses of HPC' on LinkedIn.com

Plus we'll have our regular features: Jobs Looking for People, People Looking for Jobs, and much more! We'll also be meeting for dinner at Red Lobster in Novi after the meeting.

When: February 9th, 2016 6:30 PM through 08:45 PM Where: 32737 W 12 Mile Rd Farmington Hills, MI 48334 United States
